Did you know that blackcurrants have more vitamin C than their more notorious berry friends? Well it’s all true and so powerful are its antioxidant and immune boosting properties that the purple powerhouse could be considered the new green!

Not to mention how far some berries travel, what they are sprayed with and the extreme temperatures they face all in the name of preserving them in the air.  Miserably though vitamin C is very sensitive to high temperatures so levels are significantly diminished once they disembark.

Buying local berries is therefore a must so keep your eyes peeled for those trusty blackcurrants on your next country walk and try them in a smoothie, blended with yoghurt or with cereal to ensure you get ample vitamin c to fight off all the winter germs.
